Distribution quantitative de la macrofaune benthique du peuplement des cailloutis dans le détroit du Pas de Calais (Manche orientale, France) ArchiMer
Migne, A; Davoult, D.
Because of strong tidal currents, the bottom of the Dover Strait consists of coarse sediment which is colonized by a pebble community. A quantitative study, based on 0.1 m(2) quadrat samples taken by divers, was conducted on this community to establish the richness of benthic macrofauna (in terms of biomass and diversity) and to provide conclusive data on global community structure (spatial and temporal heterogeneity, trophic structure). Eight samples were taken between June 1992 and June 1993, eight replicates being taken on each sampling visit. One hundred and one species were identified, in 10 zoological groups, and a mean biomass of 281 g.m(-2) (ash free dry weight) was calculated. The Shannon diversity index was low (H' = 1.24) because of the strong...

Examples of responses of benthic communities to environmental stress (Dover Strait, France) ArchiMer
Dewarumez, J M; Davoult, D; Frontier, S.
Rank-Frequency Diagrams (RFD) permit the determination and visualization of the coenotic strategy used by benthic communities in temporarily or permanently disturbed environments. Examples of structures, dynamic stability and strategies of benthic communities according to environmental variations are given and discussed. Both spatial and temporal variations have been analyzed by means of RFD.

Laminaria saccharina photosynthesis measured in situ: photoinhibition and xanthophyll cycle during a tidal cycle ArchiMer
Gevaert, F; Creach, A; Davoult, D; Migne, A; Levavasseur, G; Arzel, Pierre; Holl, Ac; Lemoine, Y.
Photosynthetic activity in thalli of Laminaria saccharina (Lamouroux) was followed in situ in the upper subtidal zone of a Northern Brittany rocky shore (Roscoff, France), using a submersible pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorometer. Two fluorescence parameters, the effective quantum yield of photosystem II (Phi(PSII)) and the relative electron transport rate (rETR), were estimated at various stages of a tidal cycle from 10:00 to 18:30 h, and different light conditions due to variations of water depth and position of the sun. The Phi(PSII) decreased strongly during the ebb tide, essentially due to a drop in the maximal fluorescence level for light-adapted samples (F-m'). This was the result of increasing non-photochemical quenching (NPQ). Algae totally...

Long-term changes (1979-1994) in two coastal benthic communities (English Channel): analysis of structural developments ArchiMer
Davoult, D; Dewarumez, Jm; Migne, A.
The long-term variations of two coastal benthic communities (Eastern English Channel, France) were studied between 1979 and 1994 by means of factor correspondence analysis (FCA), trophic structure and rank-frequency diagrams (RFD). FCA identified periods of relative homogeneity and periods of strong variation in the structure of the two communities. The first community, established on heterogeneous sand, showed a multi-annual cycle Linked to grain-size variations in the sediment. As passive supplies of organic matter were not important and suspension feeders could hardly live in these conditions, the community remained poor and stable and was dominated by deposit-feeders and carnivores. The other one, a rich and diverse mussel (Mytilus edulis) bed, showed...

Marine Ecosystem Services Assessment to Support Marine Management, from Theory to Practice ArchiMer
Vaschalde, D; Bailly, Denis; Cabral, Pedro; Charles, M; Daures, Fabienne; Davoult, D; Dedieu, K; Foucher, Eric; Guyader, Olivier; Laurans, Martial; Le Mao, Patrick; Le Niliot, P; Levrel, Harold; Martin, Jean Christophe; Marzin, Anahita; Mongruel, Remi; Morisseau, F; Schoenn, Jennifer; Thiebaut, E; Vanhoutte Brunier, Alice.
While economic valuation of ecosystem services (ES) is widely acknowledged as a tool to support decision-making processes, studies have also shown that there exists a literature blindspot on the effective use of economic valuation (Laurans et al. 2013; Marco ne and Mongruel 2014). The VALMER project seeks to bridge this gap between theory and practice by looking at how ecosystem services assessment (ESA) can support marine management and planning. Natural scientists, economists and marine environment managers from various institutions undertook ESAs in six pilot sites over the two sides of the Channel. The objectives of this paper are to share some results of two French ESAs, and to discuss issues and perspectives of ESAs from a marine management...
